Sacramento State’s résumé looks like one that will have to win the conference tournament to reach the NCAA field because its few bright spots, a home victory over Presbyterian and conference wins over Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado, are overwhelmed by damaging results including a home loss to UC Santa Barbara and heavy road defeats at high-major stops such as UCLA, Baylor and California along with a disappointing trip to UC Davis that underscores struggles away from home. The remaining slate, which features home dates with Montana and Montana State and matchups against Weber State, Eastern Washington and other league foes, provides opportunities to add resume-building victories but the committee will be watching for road or neutral wins against quality opponents. Taken together the lack of signature wins away from home and the succession of lopsided losses make an at-large case unlikely and point squarely to needing the automatic berth.
